What is the Upward Bound Math & Science Program?

The Upward Bound Math & Science Program is a motivational, challenging, and enriching federally funded TRiO program for high school students. The program specifically targets high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

The mission of the program is to help low income and/or first-generation college bound students achieve success at the post-secondary level by facilitating high school completion and entry, retention, and completion of post-secondary education. The program provides academic instruction through a six-week residential program, year-round support in preparing students for college admission, and opportunities for exposure to new technology and developments in the world of science.

What We Offer:

  • Saturday Academy- 10 Saturday sessions throughout the academic year. Activities include: supplemental instruction in English, math, and science, workshops, guest speakers, educational and cultural trips.
  • Six-Week Summer Program: Compton College hosts a five-week commuter component. Students have the opportunity to experience college life during the last week of the program by living in the dorms of a four-year university.

Why Should You Join?

This program is for students who are thinking about becoming a scientist, engineer, surgeon, computer analyst or students interested in math and science but need help deciding on a career. 

Enrollment Requirements:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Be a first-generation college student (parents do not have a bachelor's degree) and/or
  • Be low income
  • Be in the 9th or 10th grade
  • Want to pursue a career in math or science

How Much Does it Cost?

The program is free to eligible participants! Accommodation, meals, transportation, field trips, and other program services are all FREE!
