English and Math Placement

A recent law (Assembly Bill 705) in the state of California requires Compton College to place students into English and Math classes based on high school performance and transcripts. A student's high school performance is a strong predictor of success in transfer-level courses.

Placement Recommendations

English Placement

Although all students have the right to enroll in English 101, the following placements are recommended based on high school GPA:

  • High School GPA 2.6 or higher - English 101
  • High School GPA 1.91 to 2.59 - English 101 AND English 101S, a support class is recommended
  • High School GPA 1.9 or below - English 101 AND English 101S, a support class is strongly recommended 

Math Placement

Students in non-STEM fields such as Health and Public Services; Social Sciences; Fine Arts, Communications and Humanities; and Industrial Studies have the right to enroll in transfer-level math. However, it is highly recommended that students enroll based on high school GPA after the 11th grade. Please check with a counselor for the class most appropriate to your major.

  • High School GPA 3.0 or higher - Math 110, 120, 130, 150
  • High School GPA up to 2.99 - Math 110, 120, 130, or Math 150/Stat C1000 AND 15C (a support class for Math 150/C1000)
Students in Business-related fields have the right to enroll in transfer-level math. However, it is highly recommended that students enroll based on high school GPA as follows. It is also recommended that students meet with a counselor to determine the class most appropriate to their major.

  • High School GPA higher than 2.6 and passing High School Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 - Math 140 or 165
  • High School GPA less than 2.6 or not passing High School Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 - Math 140 or 165 and are recommended to seek out concurrent support such as tutoring in the Student Success Center.
Students in STEM fields such as Biology, Chemistry, and Math also have the right to enroll in transfer-level math. However, it is highly recommended that students enroll based on high school coursework as follows. It is also recommended that students meet with a counselor to determine the class most appropriate to their major.

  • Students who earned a C or better in High School Trigonometry, Precalculus, Integrated Math 4 or higher - Math 190. Note students meeting this criterion are NOT eligible to enroll in Math 170 or Math 180.
  • Students who took High School Trigonometry, Precalculus, Integrated Math 4 or higher but did not earn a C or better - Math 180 but are eligible to enroll in Math 190 and 19C (a support class for Math 190). Note students meeting this criterion are NOT eligible to enroll in Math 170.
  • Students who earned a C or better in High School Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 - Recommended to enroll in Math 180 but are eligible to enroll in Math 190 and 19C (a support class for Math 190). Note students meeting this criterion are NOT eligible to enroll in Math 170.
  • Students who took High School Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 but did not earn a C or better - Recommended to enroll in Math 170 but are eligible to enroll in Math 180 or Math 190 with 19C (a support class for Math 190).
Students whose highest High School math class was below Algebra 2 or Integrated Math 3 - Recommended to enroll in Math 170 but are eligible to enroll in Math 180 or Math 190 with 19C (a support class for Math 190).
