Individuals who have held Military Health Care Operations, wishing to apply to the Compton College Associate Degree Nursing Program may be eligible for advanced placement into the nursing program.

CHALLENGE/ADVANCED PLACEMENT FOR MILITARY - TRAINED HEALTHCARE PERSONNEL POLICY:

 Individuals who have documented relevant military education and experience such as Basic Medical Technician Corpsman (Navy HM or Air Force BMTCP), Army Health Care Specialist (68W Army Medic) or Air Force Independent Duty Medical Technician (IMDT 4N0X1C) and have been discharged under "honorable" conditions may be eligible to challenge the ADN program courses.  This is in compliance with the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulation in Division 14 of Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations, Section 1418: Eligibility for licensure of applicants who have Military Education and Experience. 

Candidates are eligible for advanced placement into the nursing program, after transcript review, with evidence of completing the General Education courses in addition to Dosage Calculations (N144), and experience. Upon successful completion of the challenge exam(s), dosage calculation exam and skills competency evaluation the applicant is eligible to enter the program. 

  1. Applicants must meet all general entrance requirements of the Associate Degree Nursing Program, including completion of designated prerequisites and the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).
  2. Acceptance of Military Challenge students into the Associate Degree Nursing Program is contingent upon space availability, skills competency, 75% or above on the Challenge Exam(s) and 90% on a dosage calculation quiz.   
  3. Military Challenge students admitted to the Associate Degree Nursing Program after an academic failure at another school, will not be eligible for re-entry after academic failure, or withdrawal to avoid academic failure, from the Compton College Associate Degree Nursing Program. Applicants who are eligible for second year placement (LVN equivalent) must successfully complete  N149.

 Procedure:

  1.  Interested applicants must request an appointment with the Nursing Counselor at least eight weeks prior to the application period to discuss eligibility requirements for the Associate Degree RN Program.
  2.  Applicants applying for transfer credit must submit the following materials verifying education and experience:
    1.  transcripts from appropriate education program(s), demonstrating satisfactory completion of coursework and clinical experience;
    2.  documentation of experience

 3. After a review of the applicant's documentation, and upon determination that the applicant has the met the educational and experience requirements for a nursing course, as well as the additional nursing program admission requirements, the student will be required to take a written challenge examination, a competency skills evaluation and a dosage calculation exam.

 4. The following materials will be available to the applicant once challenge confirmation is made: a. course syllabus, including course objectives;

    1.  content outline;
    2.  bibliography and textbook lists; and
    3. example of style and format of examination.

 5. Written and skills competency examinations for advanced placement or challenge must be completed four weeks prior to admission to the program, unless waived by the Director of the Nursing Program.

 6. Advanced Placement will be granted if applicant meets minimum requirements and successfully passes all required exams.
