The Compton College Associate Degree Nursing program requires "Background Check and Drug screen" on all students entering the nursing program. The background check and drug screen policy was instituted in adherence with the Joint Commission and community standards for healthcare providers. The Joint Commission requires any health care facility that requires employees to have personal criminal background checks must also require the same background check for students and volunteers involved in patient care. The background check and drug screen is not a requirement for admission to the nursing program; however, it must be completed upon admission into the program. All information obtained from the background check and drug screen will be held in strictest confidence. Students are required to complete background check and drug screens each semester or according to the clinical facilities requirement.
Effective spring 2018 ALL students will be required to have NURS 144 - Dosage Calculations and/or NURS 143 - Introduction to Nursing (generic student only) complete, depending upon the program type to which the student is applying. Students expecting to enter the nursing program for fall 2019 will no longer be eligible for admission considered without the applicable completion of NURS 144 Dosage Calculations and/or NURS 143 Introduction and Preparation for Nursing at time of application.

The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) protects the public by screening applicants for licensure in order to identify potentially unsafe practitioners. The BRN may deny applications for permanent licensure, interim permits and temporary licenses if the applicant has been found guilty of dishonesty; fraud or deceit; felony; child abuse; sex offender crimes; acts involving narcotics, dangerous drugs or devices; assault and/or battery; and other crimes. Applicants who have questions regarding limitations related to licensure should contact the California Board of Registered Nursing (916) 322-3350 or access its website at www.rn.ca.gov. It is the responsibility of the applicant to present sufficient evidence of rehabilitation. Applicants are advised to explore other career opportunities prior to investing substantial time in a nursing program if it appears that a prior serious act or conviction may jeopardize licensure.
