The Summer Scholars Transfer Institute (SSTI) is a collaborative effort between the
University of California Irvine (UCI) Center for Educational Partnerships’ Community
College Programs and the Compton College Transfer Center. The SSTI Program is tailored
for current Compton College students interested in completing Ethnic Studies 101 while
spending 7 days at UCI. The course will take place online from Monday, June 17 through
Thursday, June, 20, 2024. The summer residential transfer experience will take place
at UCI from Sunday, June, 23 through Saturday, June 29, 2024. Students must apply
to UCI-SSTI. Priority consideration will be given to students who have not applied
to a UC/CSU for fall 2024 and students who have between 15 - 45 transferable units.
Eligibility Requirements:
Current Compton College student; enrolled in at least oneunit in spring 2024
Passed English 101 (or in progress with professorrecommendation)
The Summer Scholars Transfer Institute (SSTI) is a summer residential program at the
University of California Irvine. Compton College students participating in SSTI enroll
in ESTU 101 (Introduction to Ethnic Studies) a 3-unit CSU and UC transferable course
taught by a Compton College faculty. SSTI is an intensive program, this summer class
is completed in less than 2 weeks (typically students stay at UCI for 7 days) and
some work is completed prior to beginning the residential component.
There is no cost to the student for this program. Compton College will cover books
and transportation to and from UCI-Compton College, room, and board (shared dorm-style
room and 3 daily meals). Students may be eligible for a $1,000 stipend upon completion
of the program.
Students participating in this program must be at least 18 years of age by June 1,
2024. Current Compton College students who are enrolled in at least one uit in spring
2024, passed English 101 (or in progress with Professor recommendation) by the end
of spring 2024 and have a minimum GPA of 2.4.
Students must meet the minimum eligibility requirements and submit a completed application
by the priority deadline (TBD). A committee of faculty, counselors and administrators
review each individual application (SSTI application and transcripts from all colleges
attended). Eligible students are invited for a group interview and those admitted
must attend an in-person mandatory orientation in June 2024 (TBD) at Compton College.
Students who plan to participate in SSTI are highly encouraged to make arrangements
(work, childcare, family responsibilities, and summer enrollment) in order to successfully
complete this intensive program.
If selected, prior to starting the program, you need to attend the mandatory orientation
meeting. You will be registered for the course and additional class meetings may be
required before the start of the program, but you will be notified. During orientation
students learn more about the program, the schedule at UCI and review ESTU 101 syllabus
with the instructor. This is an opportunity to meet students who will be in the program
with you, get to know the UCI and Compton College staff, counselors, and instructor.
You will have time to ask questions.
During the 7 days, students will have to follow a schedule that includes class, study
time, eating breaks, and sleeping. Although students are in class for long periods
of time, there will be scheduled workshops, campus tours and free time for fun activities.
Students will stay at UC Irvine for the entire 7 days and will be engaged in intensive
study which will require full attention and time. Please make arrangements in advance
with regards to work, school and other personal commitments.
